As shown above quails are very cute and baby quails are especially cute. Today I was driving home from the library when I came across a mother quail and her baby who were crossing the street. I tried to swerve to avoid hitting them, and at the time did not know they were quails and would hence not fly out of my tires path. I looked in my rear view mirror and to my horror saw the baby quail hobbling, clearly injured, to the side of the street. I was so upset! I drove the car back around to see the mother quail in the middle of the street waiting for her baby to try to hobble across the street to the other side. It was so sad to see the baby hurt-by me-so I pulled over and slowed down the two cars behind me to make sure no one else would run it over and kill it this time. The baby and mother finally got to the other side of the street but the mother kept running, leaving the baby. The baby ran under some little bushes. I am not the worlds biggest bird lover but this injured baby quail really tore at my heart strings and I was crying at this point. What was I to do? I was not going to leave it injured with no mother. I decided to leave it shortly and go to the nearby vet to ask them what to do? The vet said she does not take birds but that I could pick it up without hurting it or myself and she gave me a little box. She told me of a wildlife center that takes injured birds. I drove back to the bush and saw the poor baby still under the bush. A man pulled over and asked if he could help me with whatever it was I was trying to catch. I explained the traumatic episode to him and we searched for a way to get the quail out from under the bush to get help. I was still very upset that I hurt this little baby and it was still all alone. But as we were searching the quail ran out and under another bush. The good thing was it ran normal this time-as in, on both feet with no hobble. The guy who was helping me agreed the quail appeared healthy and I decided to leave it and hope it's mother would call to it. This was very traumatic for me. It was such a cute little baby no bigger than the pictures above. I really hope it is ok. When I got home I called a quail specialist, (yes, there is such a thing I guess) in the area and after explaining the incident he too thought the mother would call to the baby. What I learned: Be careful for non-flying birds. Know where you can take an injured bird or animal and/or who to call.

oh my gosh. coming from a bird hater.. this story is so sad!! Dane is just getting over a cold or recovering from allergies (since i can't really tell what it is I have been keeping him away from everyone especially kids) but as soon as he is better we need to get together. maybe we should hit up the mall to keep out of the freaking heat!
oh man, i would have felt SOOOO bad too!!! kudos for taking the extra efforts to help the baby birdie. you are awesome!!!
That nuts Kim! So sweet that you went through all of that work to help it!
What a sweetheart you are! I probably would have done the same thing though.
That is so sad! How nice of you though to help that baby bird! Brooks and I saw on the freeway a momma duck leading her babies across, when her babies got hit, she sat down in the road and got hit herself! It totally broke our hearts!
Oh my heavens!! That is a traumatic story.. i probably would have put it in my car and took it home--- i am pretty sure rhett might make fun of me!! I am such a sucker for animals!!
Kim I will always remember you calling me and crying when this happened, asking me what to do! I feel bad that I wasn't much help and I was mostly laughing. You are such an animal lover! haha - but I still love you!
You're so funny. Yesterday I saw a lizard trying to cross the road, and I tried to swerve out of the way from hitting it. I feel bad for those little guys. And I guess I'm stupid b/c I didn't know quails can't fly!
Hope everything's going well. It will probably be a while before we come out there for a visit b/c we can't afford the gas right now :( Miss you guys, though!
